Learn how to defend yourself

THE Bassonia instructors of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) will be conducting a two-day self-defence course for women.

Women are invited to do the course with a female instructor at the JKA South Bassonia Karate Club on May 5 and 12. Women of any fitness level are welcome and must be older than 14 years.

According to crime stats released by the SAPS for 2017, roughly the following amount of crimes were reported daily: 109 rapes, 52 murders, 58 attempted murders, 428 common assaults, 467 grievous assaults, 385 armed robberies and 45 hijackings.

“These are just the crimes involving bodily or possible bodily harm, not including home burglaries or car theft of possessions only or drug crimes. Only 56.7 per cent of victims report the crime to the police. Clearly, it is imperative that we stop relying on other people for our safety and learn to protect ourselves,” said Karyn Smith from the Bassonia Karate Club.
