Recycling material can put food on the table

"We no longer sell copper, which pays more. It is illegal to sell it”

SCORES of recycling trolley pullers can be seen almost every day in the streets heading to collection services where they sell their recyclables.

COURIER met with Sipho Ngwenya* in La Rochelle Road in Glenesk and he shared his experience on how he survived on recyclables. He said he worked from Monday to Friday.

“We collect paper, plastic and aluminium cans from Monday to Thursday and on a Friday we go to the collection service where we sell our stuff. Each and every suburb has its day where Pikitup will come to collect bins. That is why I work the whole week,” he said.

He said he would sell his recyclables in Springfield where, on a good day, he can make up to R300, however, that depends on the variety of the recyclables he has on his trolley.

“Aluminium cans and white paper pay more. We no longer sell copper, which pays more. It is illegal to sell it,” he said.
