Support ignites fresh hope

My faith in God helped me a lot and I now know everything is possible with Him - Gugu.

WHEN Gugu Kubheka (19) wrote her matric Life Orientation paper last year at a Recovery Life Institute, she realised she needed to change her life for the better.

Recovery Life Institute is a centre in Robertsham where drug addicts find victory through the power of connection. That is what Gugu found when she landed in the centre last year September.

“I was doing crystal methamphetamine, among other drugs, and my life was in disarray. I cannot say peer pressure pushed me to do drugs. Mine was more of a stress-related situation. I lived with family at the time. Persistent uncomfortable remarks by one of the family members led me to drugs. He would always tell me to go back home and live with my mother, which would make me sad because at the time that was the only place I could live.

“My mother and aunt booked me in at the Recovery Life Institute and my life was never the same. I thought this place was an institute where you get medicine to heal; however, this is God’s place where you embark on a spiritual journey with a lot of devotion. My faith in God has helped me a lot and I now know everything is possible with Him,” explained Gugu.

She recalled how her teachers intervened so she could write her matric at the institution. That was a life-changing experience and it is in this regard that Gugu is encouraging every youngster to have a purpose in life.

Her mother, Fikile, is very grateful her daughter’s life is finally back to normal and that she is eager to face any challenges in life. “I must say, I suspected that something was amiss when I was told that she was behaving erratically. My aunt, Zandile, referred us to this place. There is a lot of difference in Gugu’s life since Gugu came here. When you are willing to get help, nothing can stop you. I am also grateful that my daughter passed her matric and that she wants to study law, although she hasn’t found an institution to go to. I am positive she will do great for herself moving forward,” she said.
