One stitch at a time

The sewing project also gives them a place to meet, de-stress and support each other.

CROWN Gardens Sewing Project has been in existence for the past five years and has produced many good students.

The women, who were empowered through the project, are now sewing for people in their communities while being full-time domestic workers.

Others own their sewing machines and go into business for themselves.

More than 500 women have progressed through the sewing project.

The project also gives them a place to meet, de-stress and support each other.

The founder of the project, Premie Roopanand, said, “I have been running a similar sewing project at the Wendywood Clinic for over 10 years and have been recognised by the Gauteng Office of the Premier for the excellent community initiative. I am proud to say that these two projects have given me a sense of purpose. It feels so good when my students thank me for making a difference in their lives.”

They have spaces available in class. Those who are interested in dressmaking can contact Roopanand on 072 750 0375.
