Residents get apology for pools being closed

The city is now in a better position with resources.

THE City of Johannesburg has sent out an apology for the closure of public swimming pools during the festive season.

The closure of the pools was, according to the city, due to the limited chemicals used to maintain the pools. Other reasons were the maintenance of filtration systems, electrical faults due to cable theft, burst pipes and leakages and electrical down times.

The MMC for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, said the closure was regrettable but needed to ensure the safety of the public.

“Of the 55 city pools, 20 had to be closed due to the shortage, leaving 35 pools open to the public. This was regrettable. The closure of the pools was notable, especially because it occurred during the hottest days in the city.”

She said the city is now in a better position with resources.

“I would like to assure the residents that we have received the requisite stock for the cleaning of the pools, and the pools will be treated and opened to the public within the next few days.

“I would also like to reassure the residents that the city’s current administration is committed to ensuring that a shortage of chemicals never happens again. This administration is serious about offering a professional service to the people of Johannesburg.”

Sifumba answered the concerns of several residents in the south of Johannesburg who accused the DA administration of negligence.

She said the city had a large number of pools to maintain. “The pools are also old, and require constant maintenance, which was neglected by the previous administration.”

The city is, for the first time, extending the length of the pools’ accessibility from March 31 to the end of April.

“We thank all the residents for their patience and understanding during this time,” Sifumba said.
