Anger over koppie vagrants

As ratepayers, the residents feel strongly they shouldn’t have to put up with this.

RESIDENTS living in Adelaide Street, Linmeyer are fed up with vagrants who have set up home on the Linmeyer koppies.

“We are privileged to look out over the koppies, but our views have been spoilt by vagrants who have erected tent-type dwellings which we can clearly see,” one of the residents told the COURIER.

“Not only are we concerned about this, but there is a huge mess in the koppies of plastic, rubbish and glass bottles which we can see and which has been left there to be recycled. This is also a health risk,” she said.

The rubbish, glass bottles and plastic can also be seen from the bottom of Sophie Street, which is a cul-de-sac.

As ratepayers, the residents feel strongly they shouldn’t have to put up with this and are asking for assistance.

The COURIER contacted Ward 56 Councillor Michael Crichton for comment. “I have also received a number of complaints about recyclers who are making a mess in the Linmeyer koppies,” Crichton said. “I asked the City’s Environmental Health Department to investigate the complaint.

“After an initial investigation by the department, they came back to me and said the area where the recyclers are is across the municipal boundary and falls under the Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality, and as a result the officials from that municipality are required to deal with the problem.

“From the research I’ve done, it appears to be Ward 106 of Ekhuruleni and the councillor is Bruna Haipel,” Crichton said. “I am going to attempt to meet with her next week.”

Haipal, after meeting and having a look at the area with Crichton, said: “I have asked our researcher to find out if that area actually falls into my ward. On two maps I looked at, a tiny corner of Linmeyer on the northern side of the N12 is in my ward, but it is just so illogical that such a tiny piece of land on the Johannesburg side of the highway should fall into an EMM ward. I’m attempting to look into it further.”
