AFTER the COURIER reported the predicament that a Rosettenville pensioner faced due to his collapsed wall, Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton is taking further steps to help.
Joseph Mabaso complained about his wall that collapsed in February due to dumping in the service lane.
Crichton said he was informed by Mr Mabaso in High Street a number of months ago about the fact that his wall had collapsed.
“Upon being informed of this I went to his property to inspect what happened and it appears that his wall collapsed due to the amount of illegally dumped refuse that was in the service lane behind his house. As I result I requested Pikitup to investigate whether they are in fact liable for the wall collapsing.
“Pikitup did their internal investigations and concluded that they are not liable due to the fact that they are not solely responsible for the cleaning of the service lanes. The ward governance department inquired with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) but it also appears to not fall within their mandate.
“I am now engaging with the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) on this issue and the Environmental Health Department has also been investigating this issue. I have also escalated this issue to the regional director for Region F Irene Mafune and I took her to the sight,” he explained.
The councillor also mentioned that one of the possible reasons why there was so much refuse in the service lane was because the property on the other side of the service lane, 69 Lang Street, is a dilapidated block of flats that have a lot of misplaced people living there which includes recyclers, and as a result there is a lot of refuse on that property and in the service lane.
“There was a joint operation that I attended with Environmental Health Department, Pikitup, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) where that property was cleaned and the SAPS arrested one of those residents for being in possession of drugs. I have also previously inspected that property with MMC Michael Sun and the regional director Irene Mafune. I have also requested Town Planning and the Group Forensics Department to investigate this property,” he said.
