StreetSmart SA donates R30 000 to Kids Haven

The funds were handed over at an event held at The Fairway Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort in Randpark.

A DONATION of R30 000 has been made to children’s organisation Kids Haven.

StreetSmart SA, a non-profit organisation and public benefit organisation that supports the social and educational upliftment of street children, made the donation.

This was part of an allocation of more than R1-million raised nationally by StreetSmart SA for the fourth consecutive year.

The balance will be distributed to other benefactor regions.

The funds were handed over at an event held at The Fairway Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort in Randpark.

Kids Haven helps care for street children in the Johannesburg area. Its vision is to rehabilitate street children and reintegrate them into the community through care, counselling and psychosocial support. This is achieved through social work, education, monitored homework and remedial lessons, sport and leisure activities.

Kids Haven founder Moira Simpson said they were grateful for the donation, which is intended for the bridging school teacher programme, where every school will start ensuring that children are able to get back into school. Simpson said children have a future if they are educated.

StreetSmart SA chairman Melanie Burke said they were able to continue to expand their national footprint in spite of the difficult economic times thanks to the generosity of their fund-raising partners and other supporters.

“StreetSmart will be disbursing over R1-m to beneficiaries nationally, enabling us to support 31 programmes,” said Burke.

StreetSmart SA was set up in 2005 by a group of Capetonians under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
