WATCH: Afrophobia awareness video wins big

The video also won the I Am Migrant Award. The award ceremony took place on November 10 in New York City, where the winners were officially announced.

SOPHIE and Louise Kanza, originally from the DR Congo but now residents of Linmeyer, did the unbelievable when they shot a winning video about fighting Afrophobia.

They were the only African winners out of 360 global entries.

They shot their video on “zero budget”. The project was completely volunteer-driven.

#Singabantu won the International United Nations Award.

#Singabantu – We are human is an Afrophobia awareness short film shot in the remains of a Rosettenville house burnt to the ground during service delivery protests that turned into a nationwide wave of Afrophobic attacks.

The video stars a diverse group of African immigrant youth in South Africa who share the daily plight they face as ‘foreigners’ in South Africa.

They make reference to different stereotypes attached to their home countries and end off with a call for unity, love and tolerance.

“I am really excited about the win. I am also shocked that my first attempt at writing and directing could receive such recognition,” said Louise Kanza, co-founder of the Sophie A Kanza Foundation.

The video was launched for Africa Month. It also aired on TRACE Africa, where it was viewed in over 18 countries.

#Singabantu was firstly shortlisted in the top 60 out of 320 worldwide entries by PLURAL+, a youth festival on migration run by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
