Infrastructure upgrade needed

I was shocked at the severity of the damages caused by the flooding - Clr Peter Stewart.

THE residents in upper Kibler Park living around Branksome Heights, Golf Crescent, Palm and upper Peggy Vera Road have been plagued with regular water pipe bursts which are causing continuous damage to their properties.

Ward 125 Clr Peter Stewart said in the early hours of November 11, a massive water pipe burst in upper Peggy Vera Road caused damage to private property and havoc for vehicles.

“The floods caused by the burst pipe on the properties of Dewald Jonker and Nicholas Potts damaged garden walls and infrastructure, not to mention the property of Audrey Kerr whose most beautifully cultivated garden she had nurtured for years was washed away. Only mud and debris remained as garden walls tumbled under the pressure of the severe flooding.

“I was shocked at the severity of the damage caused by the flooding and requested residents to please claim via their personal householders insurances who will, in return, counter claim from the city’s insurance. Unfortunately these damages are a direct result of the lack of infrastructure upgrades that are older than 50 to 60 years and which should have been attended to years ago. This is a phenomenon across the City of Johannesburg.

“The new administration is anxiously trying to get the financial means to remedy the situation but this is proving to be a mammoth task because the enormities of the problem outweigh the financial means at hand,” explained Clr Stewart.

The executive mayor of Johannesburg, Clr Herman Mashaba, called a press conference on November 7 to inform the residents of Johannesburg about the severity of the decaying infrastructure of the city and the mammoth task authorities have on their hands to maintain and upgrade it.
