A MORNING spent learning how to propagate plants was enjoyed by the members of Eikenhof Women’s Institute on November 8, at the hall of St Andrew’s Church in Suideroord.
Rob Winter, guest speaker and chairman of Johannesburg South Garden Club, took the members step by step through gardening tips to propagate plants.
He explained the benefits of a good mix of potting soil and how easily some plants can be propagated, especially fuchsias which he is passionate about.
“You can take fuchsia cuttings at any time from spring to autumn, but spring is a good time to do it. You cut a young growing tip or pinch it out just above the second or third pair of leaves. A great gardening tip I received a few years ago from a fellow gardener, is to use the ash from burnt braai wood as a rooting powder for fuchsias. It works brilliantly,” he said. Rob answered questions from members and light refreshments were enjoyed after the talk.
