A PARK in Suideroord, which runs between Van der Hoff and Maritz streets, has become an eyesore, as well as a danger to children who use it.
According to a resident who often walks through the park, there are so many broken glass bottles, right from the entrance of the park to the actual play area, filthy discarded take-away containers, cigarette butts and litter everywhere, it is unsafe for children to play.
“We went there on Sunday and a piece of broken glass went through my husband’s shoe into his heel! The state of the park is disgusting and some of the children’s play apparatus is unapproachable because of broken glass. If children were to walk barefoot, their feet would be cut.
“I have complained to Ward 54 Clr Sergio dos Santos about the disgusting state of the park. It has also become a gathering place for teenagers and their mates to park, smoke and play very loud music and drink in their cars, leaving their filthy litter all over. There is nothing to stop them and by the time anybody reaches them to complain they either get rid of the booze or drive off. Weekends seem to turn the park into a braai and booze area and when the sun starts going down all the cars start pulling in to the place, playing loud music.
“The park is a wasteland for litter and the wildlife has almost disappeared. Even though there are sufficient dustbins, litter and broken booze bottles lay all over the ‘park’. It’s hazardous just walking along the path. A couple that came to the park intending to have a picnic had to put up their umbrella about 50 metres away from the actual park, as there was just too much rubbish lying all over,” she said.
Clr Dos Santos and City Parks have been asked for comment.
