Marlon is on the road to recovery

Thank you (COURIER) for your article. The power of the media, coupled with social media, may just have saved the life of this man! - Wendy Purdon.

A THEN destitute, disabled and epileptic Marlon Peter Harper (54) is in rehab at Jericho in the Free State and he is getting better.

COURIER ran his story two months ago when a stranger, Brad Bennetts, met him in the middle of August in Scottburgh, KwaZulu Natal. Their chat led to them realising that they are both from the South of Johannesburg.

Since then, friends, strangers and people who know him have come forward to help hence he now is in rehab.

Wendy Purdon, St Martins alumni said: “He is getting well, stronger and the epilepsy is now under control. Thank you (COURIER) for your article. The power of the media, coupled with social media, may just have saved the life of this man! Now we would love to find his children,” said Wendy.

Marlon was a member of the South African Police in Booysens and worked with firearm licences. After his national service, he was a traffic cop in Johannesburg and Sandton before joining the SAPS.

Here is an extract from the letter from Marlon to the alumni of St Martins

Howzit guys? Thanks for the cool email I got the other day. Always makes my day and week – gives me a turbo boost. So glad you guys are chatting with each other and catching up with the good old days. It gives me good memories too. Damn! We used to have good times. On my weekend off I would like to see as many of you as possible. Won’t say no to a braai. At least we will be sober and of a clear mind.

Thanks to the good Lord and His Angels which He sent to my rescue. Bless all of you. As much as I drank, I still prayed and He answered me. Praise Him. I still cannot thank you angels enough for what you are doing for me. Your belief and encouragement is overwhelming to me. Please tell Michael thanks for his concern and to be strong as God is with him no matter what. His turn will come. I just want to get through these six months and then we can take it from there.

I just know that I am going to go forward and no looking back and falling no more. It’s been a true miracle; legs are still a bit unstable Wendy, but getting better thank you. As far as seizures go I have been great. Doctor whom I saw seemed to have sorted it out with the medication dosage.

I will continue enlightening you guys on the routines here. On other days we chilled with movies and table tennis, however, during the week we have classes, praise and work. Thank you Fuzzy, Wayne, Debbie, Allan and Dennis.

Love you guys, Marlon.
