A senior public prosecutor Ntombesuhlani Sonqisha (45) was sentenced to seven years while their apparent accomplice, a Legal Aid attorney Prenika Munu (39), was fined R50 000 or five years imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
According to the Hawks, a complainant, in this case, was a suspect in a fraud case which happened in March 2015 where he and four others were arrested for alleged fraud.
The allegations were that the suspects defrauded banks and car dealers by submitting fraudulent IDs, payslips, and addresses when purchasing vehicles and later stopped paying instalments.
According to the Hawks, when the banks threatened to repossess those vehicles, the suspects would subsequently disappear.
Munu represented the complainant and introduced him to Sonqisha.
Sonqisha was said to have demanded R7 000 to withdraw the case and turn the complainant into a State witness.
An operation was mapped out by the Hawks corruption unit who set a trap operation in December 2015.
Munu and Sonqisha were arrested in possession of the entrapment money.
Munu pleaded guilty to corruption charges and was fined R50 000 or five years imprisonment which was suspended on condition that she will not be convicted of any offence.
Sonqisha was found guilty on corruption charges and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
The Hawks welcomed the sentencing of the officials for corruption.
