Residents deserve to be free and safe

There have also been a number of complaints about the night clubs causing a huge disturbance to some of the residents of The Hill.

RESIDENTS of The Hill, Rosettenville and Regents Park met to discuss the various criminal elements that have been plaguing their suburbs for the past number of years on October 7.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton and Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame were there to listen to the residents’ concerns and give their input. The main concerns of the residents appeared to be that of drugs in the areas, excessively loud music being played constantly by liquor outlets in the suburbs and alleged corruption within the South African Police Service.

Regular raids

Clr Crichton said: “I fully empathise with what the residents are experiencing, especially those that have been victims of crime. Ever since I came into office I have made combating crime one of my priorities, as I have regular raids with the various entities such as the SAPS, Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD), Environmental Health, and the EMS. The City, together with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, recently held a workshop on human trafficking and there is going to be a drug awareness campaign on October 20. There is a need to fight crime from all angles to help our residents feel safe and secure.”

Nightclub problems

There have also been a number of complaints about the nightclubs causing a huge disturbance to some of the residents of The Hill. The issues range from excessive loud music being played throughout the night to the patrons standing outside the club fighting, shouting, throwing bottles on the pavement, urinating in public and wheel spinning their cars.

“With regards to the nightclub, I had a meeting on October 2 with the owner of the club, the managing agent Tupa, the JMPD and the Environmental Health Department. It was made clear to the owner that his club has to comply and respect the city’s bylaws. On October 3, the Environmental Health Department inspected the club’s soundproofing and on October 5 the club was inspected by the JMPD, Ward 55 Clr Rashieda Landis and myself.

“It was made clear to the management of the club that if we receive any further complaints that the JMPD will have no choice other than to impound their sound system. I have requested Environmental Health to do an inspection of the club’s kitchen and will be writing to the liquor board to establish the validity of the liquor licence,” explained Clr Crichton.
