Progress being made in transport infrastructure

THE Department of Transport in the City of Johannesburg recently presented its fourth quarterly report at the council meeting held on September 28.

The report indicated that the ongoing construction of Phase 1C of the Rea Vaya bus service, among other projects, will help the new DA-led administration to achieve the city’s five per cent economic growth. Part of the department’s strategic thrust is to have a Pro-poor Development Policy that aims to address inequality, and to have an operational and effective public transport system.

“We are happy and excited to relay the highlights indicated by the Transport Department in its Fourth Quarter report,” said Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton.

The highlights are as follows:

• A 16.1km road is being developed along Louis Botha Avenue and Katherine Drive for the Rea Vaya Phase 1C, for an efficient bus service.

• The completion of the new pedestrian and bus bridge over the M1 at Lees Street will make it safer for pedestrians who need to make it across.

• The Sandton transport loop is at 97 per cent completion. This will enable motorists to travel safely and arrive at their destinations on time.

• Over 100 road safety and education programmes were implemented to help reduce accidents on the road.

• To empower people, 110 previously disadvantaged taxi operators completed a first-ever six-month course at the Wits School of Business.

“With these great improvements in the fourth quarter, we are confident the transport department will overcome the current challenges and that they are forging ahead with the City’s pro-poor policy to promote economic growth,” said Crichton.

The City of Johannesburg is fast becoming more accessible thanks to these new developments.
