A close call for motorists on Kliprivier Drive

“Last week it happened again and by me veering to save myself I almost hit the newspaper boy who stands on that corner every morning."

A RESIDENT of Glenvista says she’s an early riser and commutes between 5am and 6am along Kliprivier Drive in a northerly direction.

“At the top of the incline, with Virgin Active Gym to the right, is Van Beek Avenue. For the past year accidents have happened because there is no possibility of turning right into Van Beek Avenue and the gym from Kliprivier drive. This leads car owners and careless drivers as well as gym goers to turn right and drive on the opposite lane illegally.

“I have been victim of a couple of scares and thankfully I’ve been quick enough to react and avoid a head-on car crash.

“Last week it happened again. I had to veer to save myself and almost hit the newspaper boy who stands on that corner every morning. It could have led to a fatality. No damage was done and no one was hurt, thank goodness, but I think a prompt solution is needed. There should be police surveillance from the very early hours – maybe a camera at the intersection would identify and sanction illegal drivers. Redirecting the road would make it user-friendly and safe. Any suggestions?” she added.

The COURIER contacted JRA (Johannesburg Roads Agency) for comment:

“Kliprivier Drive is a provincial road. Partial access at the intersection with Van Beek Avenue which allows for left in, left out, and right out movement from Van Beek and left in movement from Kliprivier Drive, has been approved. The partial access does not allow for vehicles to turn right from Klipriver Drive into Van Beek Avenue. Further enquiries relating to the road, must be directed to Mr Sipho Tshabalala at Provincial Roads Authority via: sipho.tshabalala@gauteng.gov.za,” said Scheepers, Operations Manager of Marketing and Communications at Johannesburg Roads Agency.
