Help learners to shine at reading

Make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

SHINE is a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve the literacy outcomes for children from disadvantaged communities in South Africa and they recently showed their support at Lerato Educational Centre by helping children to read and write.

The first centre opened in Cape Town in 2000. The Chapter at Lerato Educational Centre in Jacksons Drift Informal Settlement started at the beginning of the year and is the first one in Gauteng. Shine is looking for volunteers to help run the Shine Literacy Hour.

Volunteers give support to children in Grade Two to help strengthen their reading, writing and speaking skills. Volunteers support the same children each week and work with two children at a time.

No previous experience is needed and the organisation will give volunteers training, materials and on-going support. Sessions take place Mondays to Thursdays in the mornings.
