Take a look at history

Have you still got your business which was advertised in this paper? Or do you recognise anyone or anything?

A RESIDENT of Suideroord, Joy Boswell, lent me a copy of the Southern Mirror which was the December 1973/ January 1974 local community newspaper distributed in some parts of Johannesburg South at the time.

FRONT PAGE: Looks like Wemmer Pan.

Interestingly enough, this paper contains photographs of pin-up girls, which is a rarity – if ever seen in local community newspapers nowadays! Rather risqué! Wouldn’t you agree?

PAGES FOUR AND FIVE: Check out Checkers’ advert.

Blunders appeared but I guess in those days, there was no ‘spell check’ on computers. In fact, there were no computers in South Africa…. I don’t think so anyway!

PAGES TWO AND THREE: The story on page three is titled, ‘Safari through a Supermarket’. There is still no supermarket which caters exclusively for small children!

Back then you could secure choice land in Brackendowns Ext 4 – “the newest sector of Alberton’s most exclusive residential area” – for R380. I wonder what residents of that time would make of Bassonia Rocks, Bassonia Estate, Meyersdal Nature Estate and Meyersdal Eco Estate as we know them. Most wouldn’t have believed it possible for such stunning and enormous homes to be built from the late 1990s onwards.

PAGES SIX AND SEVEN: Read Focus on Glamour.

Only one crime article appeared on the second page of the newspaper and Checkers was advertised as ‘Your Five-Star Supermarket’ having branches in Southdale, Turffontein and La Rochelle.

PAGES EIGHT AND NINE: Advert for Southern Suburbs Health Centre.
