Conservationist is leaving ecological footprints

It’s time we began to live carefully, reducing waste and doing the right things, creating an eco and not ego world.

CONSERVATIONIST Jonathan Leeming was the guest speaker at the Johannesburg South Garden Club meeting on July 25, which was held at the Winning Room, Queenshaven Retirement Village.

“The world our children will grow up in will be vastly different to the one we grew up in,” said Jonathan, who spoke about the ecological footprints we leave on earth. “Every 12 years another billion people are added to the earth and we need to begin looking at how we impact the world.

“Climate change is a huge focal point. Some people say climate change is man-made but in reality, we create too much waste which has an adverse effect. It’s time to live carefully, reduce waste and do the right things. We need to create an ‘eco’ world and not an ‘ego’ world,” added Johnathan.

“We need to plant more trees, indigenous ones preferably, but plant any trees would be better than none at all. Recycling should become second nature although it’s not the solution. It is only an interim solution. If we care for the world we live in, our footprint will be less.

“Begin checking products for ingredients. So many packages make the product sound good for you or your body but in reality, many ingredients are very harmful to us. It’s all about change and we need to change. The future starts here, right now,” Jonathan concluded.

After the interesting talk, members enjoyed homemade soup and rolls.
