The man beat the dog’s leg until its bone shattered and doctors were forced to amputate.

An alleged animal abuser is in police custody after severely beating a dog and causing it to have its leg amputated in an effort to keep it alive.

Shocking images of a dog known as Snoopy circulated on social media detailing the events that saw Snoopy taken by the Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC) after being brutally abused by a man. The attack took place on June 30.

SARAC spokesperson, Jerry Selwane, said the Orlando East culprit from Soweto was finally behind bars after the police and SARAC worked around the clock to ensure justice for Snoopy was finally served.

He added Snoopy was at the Kibler Park Veterinary Clinic so that they could monitor the dog and see what care it needed to overcome any further challenges it might face.

SHOCKING: the broken bones of Snoopy

He said the man who assaulted Snoopy claimed Snoopy was a nuisance in the area.

The man was taken into police custody last week and a docket was opened according to subsection 2(1)(a) of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 which states that any person who ill-treats, infuriates, tortures, cruelly beats or kicks or terrifies any animal may be taken into police custody.

Selwane said Snoopy’s leg was amputated as the bone was crushed after the brutal attack.

AMPUTATION: Snoopy after his operation.

“Dr Erusmus had no choice but to amputate as the skin was the only thing holding Snoopy’s right hind leg together. Snoopy will be spending a few weeks at the vet until she’s fully recovered and is used to her disability,” he added.

“Marti Victor from Supreme Pet visited the fur baby and settled the account.”

Selwane said they lauded Victor for her selfless act.

Snoopy was allegedly repeatedly hit on the hind leg until it was shattered. According to SARAC people reported that they could hear the dog’s cries for help far away from the scene.

It is alleged the culprit, after realising that the Snoopy was drawing attention, left the animal lying on the ground and walked away.

ABUSE: Snoopy was beaten until her leg was shattered.

“When questioned as to why he was brutally attacking the dog his response was that the dog was a nuisance and no one could arrest him.”

Selwane said SARAC’s primary aim was to take Snoopy to the vet and ensure that she was safe and received much-needed care.

He said there was some adapting that needed to be done by the strong-willed Snoopy.

JUSTICE: A docket against the culprit is opened.

“She still needs to get used to her disability and the rest will follow,” he said.

“She is recovering and we are positive that she will be fine in no time.”

Asked how the community could help in this situation Selwane said they could offer help in two ways. The first was to report any form of abuse of animals immediately. And the second was to sponsor their centre because they solely worked on donations as they were a non-profit organisation.

Selwane said a few pet-lovers have offered to adopt Snoopy which was wonderful to know.

He said the furry friend would be considered for adoption once she was fit to leave the veterinary clinic.

Orlando East Police Station was still to confirm the alleged culprit was behind bars at the time of going to print. The police said it was likely that the suspect had been to the court considering he was booked on Monday.

The COURIER is awaiting feedback from police.
