MEC saddened by the number of road fatalities

A total number of over 21 road fatalities were recorded that past weekend.

THE Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, is shocked by the tragic road fatalities which took place on Gauteng’s roads over the weekend of July 8.

Over 21 road fatalities were recorded that weekend. On Sunday morning, between Braamfisher and Jan Smuts Road in Randburg, a driver of a Range Rover was arrested for driving into a group of nine men who were standing on the roadside. He was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Five men were critically injured and four were declared dead on the scene.

“The weekend’s road fatalities reverse the gains we recorded regarding maintaining road safety in the Province and this is worrying. Every day we undertake road safety awareness campaigns and law enforcement operations but our messages of adhering to road traffic laws seem to be falling on deaf ears. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. I appeal to road users to exercise caution and to adhere to road traffic laws,” said the MEC.
