COUNCILLOR Radebe’s funeral service was held at Forest High School and the cortège proceeded to the Westpark Cemetery.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the community of Ward 124 mourn the passing of Clr and Cde Sidney Thembinkosi Radebe, who passed away on May 22.

Nomazwe Ntlokwana, chairperson of ANC Zone 11 said it was with deep sadness that the ANC in Johannesburg South, Zone 11 learnt of the passing of community leader, activist and comrade Clr Radebe.

The late Clr Radebe was born in 1958 in Atteridgeville, Tshwane and grew up in East London, where he attended primary and high school. He matriculated at Majombozi High School. A staunch soccer player, he earned himself the name “Jazinho” for his excellent skills. His love for his cultural heritage saw him travelling extensively across the length and breadth of the country and performing with various musical groups.
Radebe came to Gauteng in the late ’70s and was elected as a shop steward of the National Union of Metal Workers (NUMSA). His outstanding service to the workers led to his being elected onto NUMSA’s Regional Executive Committee in the Wits East region. In the early ’80s, he joined the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Congress of South African Teachers Union (Cosatu) to further advance the fight against the apartheid system.
He dedicated his time to help build ANC structures in the early ’90s and was later elected as the chairperson of the Johannesburg South West branch, which later became the Gandhi Mahlangu branch. Because of his commitment and dedication to the betterment of the lives of ordinary people, he volunteered his spare time to assist at the Joburg South Parliamentary Constituency Office (PCO) until his untimely death – where he specialised in labour matters.
Radebe served as a member of many boards, including that of Region 9 Development Centre from 2000 to 2008. He was deployed to become a ward councillor in 2011. He was a highly dedicated person and went all out to address the needs of the communities, not only in ward 124 but also in Johannesburg South as a whole. His exceptional service to the community earned him a second term as ward councillor.

“At the time of his untimely death, comrade Clr Radebe was a councillor for Ward 124, which includes areas such Booysens, Forest Hill, City Power, Reuven, Southern Suburbs, Kenilworth, Glenesk, Turffontein and the inner city. During the difficult times facing our organisation, he was an advocate of unity and democracy within the structures, especially his own branch: Bertha Gxowa,” said Nomazwe Ntlokwana.
