Nomvula Mphuthi makes Mrs SA top 100

Mrs South Africa semi-finalist Nomvula Mphuthi – she is smart and ambitious and cares about her family and community.

NOMVULA Mphuthi is a 34-year-old working woman, student and proud mother of three who is now a semi-finalist in the Mrs South Africa pageant.

Currently living in Ormonde, Nomvula was born in Krugersdorp and later went on to live in KwaZulu-Natal with her grandmother.

“We had no electricity or running water and had to go to the river daily to draw water, and once a week we had to go to the field to get wood to start fires to prepare our meals and boil water for bathing – that would be on weekends as I would be at school during the week. I attended school at Kwa-Madlala Higher Primary School – the only school available in the village,” reminisced the semi-finalist.

It was when she was in Grade Seven that she moved to Alexandra township in Johannesburg to live with her mother, aunt and grandmother, and attended Ithute Primary School and then Alexandra High School.

“Mrs South Africa is not just a beauty pageant; it is a self-empowerment programme that assists you to be the best version of yourself, to get you out of your comfort zone and do big things that you never thought that you’re capable of doing, and I’m so grateful to be part of it,” she said.

She told the COURIER that when the top 100 was announced she was at work with colleagues.

“I remember how nervous I was, as the names were being called out and they finally announced my name. My colleagues screamed and they came running towards me to tell me that they just heard my name announced as a semi-finalist. I was so excited as I have always loved modelling, since primary school. Even my rural primary school used to have beauty pageants and I would enter them all the way through to high school, always becoming first princess every time I entered,” said Nomvula.

Nomvula is currently studying BBA in Marketing with IMM Graduate School.

“I am grateful for my upbringing, as it taught me to be strong, and appreciate the little things in life and know that nothing comes easy, that I must always work hard, and do my best in everything that I do or aspire to do. My grandmother always advised me to always tell the truth no matter what,” she said.

The stunning finalist got married in 2011 to her best friend, Thabo Mphuthi, whom she met in Alexandra. They now have three wonderful kids: Thobile (12), Thato (4) and Thapelo (2).

“I am truly enjoying my role as a mother and hope that my kids will be proud of me for all the things I have achieved. I am so grateful to my Heavenly Father for giving me these beautiful souls to raise,” said the proud mother, who has been working at Transnet since 2009.

Nomvula works in the Commercial and Marketing Department as an Executive Personal Assistant in the National Ports Authority Head Office and, outside the corporate world, is also a fashion and beauty blogger, make-up artist and nail technician.

“I decided to enter Mrs South Africa to empower myself and also to empower other women. My previous modelling experience, coupled with my working experience, allows me to use this platform to reach women all over South Africa in a positive way. This opportunity will allow me to be part of raising awareness about cancer, especially after I lost my mother to cancer,” she concluded.
