Fatal Walkerville crash claims nine

The taxi was the only vehicle involved in the fatal accident.

Nine people have died in a fatal taxi accident on the R82 heading towards Walkerville earlier this morning (Thursday, March 2).

It is alleged that the taxi veered across the road and slammed into a concrete bus stop when the driver tried to avoid a car stationed in front of him.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, paramedics found that 17 people were involved in the accident and many of them were ejected from the taxi.

“Of the 17 patients eight of them sustained fatal injuries and another four sustained critical injuries,” said Vermaak in a statement earlier (before the toll rose to nine).

Paramedics treated the patients on the scene. Four of them were rushed to a nearby hospital. Once stabilised the remainder the rest of the injured were later transported to various hospitals in the area and the taxi was the only vehicle involved in the accident.
