MMC of Public Safety, Michael Sun, applauded the JMPD K9 unit and SAPS officers who acted swiftly to arrest seven suspects in possession of ready-to-sell drugs at the Lenasia taxi rank following a tip-off.
The police confiscated packages of dagga, crystal meth and cat worth R16 000 at the corner of Carmane and Calf streets and charged the suspects with possession of, and dealing in, illicit drugs.
MMC Sun said, “I wish to congratulate the officers of SAPS and the JMPD K9 Unit for their efforts in bringing these drug dealers in Lenasia down. The City of Johannesburg is clamping down on crime and drugs across the city and every arrest our JMPD officers make means one less drug dealer on our streets.
“We appreciate the co-operation and help from community members to not only identify drug hot-spots, but also the unsavoury characters aiding these criminals. It is reported that some members of the community are working with the drug dealers and tipped them off about the sweeping operation. Had this not been the case, we would have seen more arrests and recoveries.”
MMC Sun explained that the city remains committed to fighting the crime and drugs plaguing communities and will do everything in its power to ensure that criminals cannot rest in Johannesburg and that residents are kept safe.
