Rosettenville’s alleged problematic houses raided

JMPD, SAPS and the Mayor of Johannesburg raid Rosettenville's alleged problematic houses

NOTORIOUS spots in Rosettenville were taken by surprise when large teams of policing authorities conducted a night raid targeting alleged problematic homes on Wednesday, February 8.

JMPD, SAPS, local councillors, MMC Michael Sun and City Mayor Herman Mashaba joined forces to make the lives of Southern criminals uncomfortable in an initiative that is set to last for a long time.

These actions stemmed from the frustrations of locals who took matters into their own hands on Sunday, February 5. They gathered on the streets of Rosettenville to demonstrate their disapproval of drug dealing, prostitution and house hijacking.

The City of Johannesburg invited numerous media houses to witness what Mashaba calls a “political will to eradicate crime that has been missing in the municipality, to help the police win the battle against criminal syndicates terrorising residents of the South.”

Teams split to occupy Rosettenville, making arrests and allowing social workers a chance to communicate with sex workers who were found in the houses.

Most of the girls did not seem to want help. One young woman said: “I am happy to be here. I am chopping my money. Nobody is helping me chop my money.”

Local residents came out of their homes to speak to Mashaba and express their disappointment in the police of Moffat View. They shared their ordeal about raising children in a neighbourhood where sex workers and drug dealers take over the streets after dark.

Mashaba confirmed that the girls used as sex workers are as young as nine years old. He added: “I will engage national government to assist us.

“I have already written to the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, to assist us. On Sunday, February 5, we found that plenty of residents did not have the necessary paperwork. This is not acceptable. No country in the world allows people to live in it without paperwork.

“I find it very strange when we South Africans accept this and do not want to talk about so many people who do not have documentation. At the end of the day, crime is not only committed by foreign nationals. All criminals shall know that crime will not be tolerated in this city.”
