Hijackers caught swiftly

Failed hijack spoils a bleeding suspect's day.

TUESDAY, January 7, turned into a bad day for one unlucky hijacking suspect who was bleeding while trapped at the corner of Vickers and North roads in Regents Park.

Spectators watching from a distance said the suspect, who seemed to be crawling from the grass to the edge of the pavement, got what was coming to him.

His injury did not seem fatal and was probably the reason some neighbours laughed and asked how he would be able to spin (hijack) other vehicles if he lost his ability to walk.

Moffatview SAPS spokesperson, Cst Rebecca Bila, later informed the COURIER that JMPD officer Jones Mkhari was stopped around 09:45 on North Road by a man who informed them of a vehicle that was just hijacked near an Engen garage on the same road.

Mkhari and his partner quickly reacted and came across a white Nissan Hardbody. They witnessed two suspects jumping from it into a Ford Fiesta that was escorted by a VW Golf.

The officers immediately chased the suspects until the Ford Fiesta lost control and crashed into a wall. The two suspects got out and tried to run away on foot.

The one was caught immediately and the second suspect was caught by backup officers on the N17 highway.

The source of the one suspect’s injury is not known.
