Develop your skills at the centre

This non-profit-organisation (NPO), which is located in La Rochelle, was started with the objective of providing community development and poverty alleviation interventions.

SCORES of people in the South have, over the past 14 years, benefited from the skills development initiatives offered at the Region 9 Development Centre (Centre 9).

This non-profit-organisation (NPO), which is located in La Rochelle, was started with the objective of providing community development and poverty alleviation interventions.

These are executed through the provision of psychosocial, development and support services, as well as intervention services in area’s not serviced by government programmes.

Neo Maphanga, centre manager, said: “Whether you have been dreaming of running your own business, do not have education or skills, need to study further or just want an opportunity and information, you need to visit the centre – it could be your biggest step.”

Primary objectives of the centre include:

• To eradicate poverty.

• Stimulate job creation.

• To provide information related to government services.

• Link them to programmes offered by the centre.

• Provide job seekers with valuable soft skills to ensure that they are marketable.

Secondary objectives:

• To broadcast information and to provide the community with the knowledge and access to life skills training, business, employment skills, technical skills that will create employment and development of small businesses.

• To be involved in community projects such as environmental clean-ups, repair damaged community infrastructure, provision of basic services, food gardening and education.

The centre has trained a number of people in its 2016/17 financial year:

• Life skills, goal setting, time management and good communication skills: 580

• Learnership in furniture making: 20

• Three-month skills programme in cabinet making and upholstery: 60

• Plumbing: 7

• Brick-laying: 7

• Accredited electrical qualification: 16

• Basic computer training: 80

• Job placement: 60

Region 9 Development Centre also provides an aftercare for homework and conducts life skills training monthly.
