HUNDREDS of learners and parents flocked to various schools in the South with smiles on their faces on Thursday, January 5, to celebrate the milestones of their leaver class of 2016.
In the early hours of the morning, learners were spotted walking in the streets of the South towards their schools, with newspapers folded and shoved in their under arms and pens between their fingers – as they had woken up very early in the morning to mark a line under their names, on the list of names on the thick papers.
Teachers informed the COURIER that they were happy with the results and proud of their learners, as they had applied themselves throughout 2016 and were ultimately reaping the fruits of their labour. Most schools experienced an increase in their marks and celebrated in style. Die Fakkel High School even hosted a graduation ceremony, with the learners wearing gowns and receiving certificates, like they do in the United States of America.
Some parents cried as they watched their children, who would be the first in their families to go to university and study towards a career of their own choice – and work towards achieving their dreams of becoming what they’ve always dreamed of becoming.
Impressive was the fact that most of the learners already knew what they are going to be studying throughout 2017 – and despite university protests, numerous students said they had applied for university early and already have a space. They knew they would be getting financial assistance to study at tertiary level, from the National Student Financial Scheme.
