Emdeni Development Centre receives a jojo tank

Abraham Kriel Childcare is proud of Nedbank staff who donated a jojo to help the needy.

THE South’s Abraham Kriel Childcare is proud of Nedbank staff, who donated a Jojo tank to the Emdeni Development Centre, as part of their giving back initiative, on Friday, October 28.

The bank divided their staff into small groups and each group had the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to assist the centre, which has an urgent need to manage its water resources.

The centre offers a six-month training course in basic hydroponics and operates 44 tunnels, used both to accommodate the hydroponics training and for people who have finished their training to conduct their own small businesses to sustain their families by cultivating vegetables in these tunnels.

Most activities in the centre require water and, fortunately, the facility has a borehole that supplies the entire enterprise with sufficient water.

The Jojo tank was needed to store the water from the borehole and make it accessible to students and tunnel farmers.

Abraham Kriel Childcare is constantly striving to balance the needs of its 1 000-plus beneficiaries with the requirements of their environment with its scarce resources.

This water resource will serve as a standby in case of severe water scarcity. In the meantime, the organisation endeavours to save water to the best of its ability.

This is a challenge, with between 12 and 18 people living in any one house and up to 100 beneficiaries making use of a single drop-in centre for orphaned and vulnerable children.
