Dog survives cruelty by school children

Luckily, and thanks to the compassionate and dedicated care of the veterinary staff, she has recovered to the extent that on October 27, she was admitted to the AACL kennels.

ANIMAL Anti-Cruelty League members were called by a staff member of a primary school in Kibler Park on Wednesday October 19, to collect a dog that had been hurt and was lying under a prefabricated building at the school.

Apparently the children had been throwing stones and bricks at the dog, which had been so badly injured that she was unable to walk. When the inspectors arrived to collect her, she was in a severely traumatised state with apparent head injuries. Admitted to the AACL’s veterinary hospital, she was treated for head trauma.

Luckily and thanks to the compassionate and dedicated care of the veterinary staff, she has recovered to the extent that she was admitted to the AACL kennels on October 27. AACL Inspector Denton Infield is hopeful she will be adopted into a loving new home, as she will soon become available for adoption. “Although she is still quite nervous, she is a really good natured, lovable dog, who more than deserves some tender loving care,” said the Inspector.

Following the incident, the AACL Johannesburg’s Education Officer has visited the school in question on two separate occasions, addressing the younger and older learners and introducing them to responsible pet care, ownership and the importance of showing kindness and compassion to all animals. The children were receptive to learning about the programme and hopefully with positive reinforcement, this will have the long-term desired effect of influencing their choices regarding animals in the future.

Should you be interested in adopting this dog or any other pet from the AACL, call the Kennel Supervisor, Miriam Bezuidenhout; or should you wish AACL Education Officer Johann Steenkamp to visit your school; and if you wish to report cruelty to animals, call Inspector Rulof Jackson – they can all be contacted on 011 435 0672.
