Garbage dumped around the school

This could become a serious health hazard for the school.

LEARNERS and staff at the Hamlet School for pupils with special educational needs in Turffontein, were very excited when the upgrade of Rotunda Park and surrounding area started last year.

Paving was laid, benches were built and gardens were established in High Street, with the promise of doing constant maintenance and keeping the area clean.

To the school’s dismay, the picture turned around completely – with rubbish such as used baby nappies, empty liquor bottles and old computer equipment now dumped in this small area on a daily basis.

The principal, Deric Joyce, said: “It looks 10 times worse than before and the littering happens in front of one of the main entrances to the school. This could become a serious health hazard for the school.”

The school in Bertha Street is pleading with the community of the area, to refrain from littering. The school can be contacted on 011 683 2362.
