Dalmondeor donates to Bokang

Master Bokang Manqoba Mosia - The brain behind Bokang Mosia Foundation

BOKANG Mosia is an amazing 10-year-old boy with a drive to help less fortunate children through his initiative, Bokang Blanket Drive that gave birth to the Bokang Mosia Foundation. This young lad was also the Lead South African Youth Hero for July 2015.

Grade one learners of Laerskool Dalmondeor recently donated R2 700 to the Bokang Mosia Foundation and their friend Bokang on Friday October 14. It was indeed a special day that saw all the grade ones participate in the cancer awareness programme.

The theme for the day was “gratitude”, and the school was thankful that Bokang, an ex-pupil of Laerskool Dalmondeor and cancer survivor, could visit the school.

The Bokang Mosia Foundation is a non-profit organisation that acts as a catalyst for change and is aimed at creating lasting solutions to poverty, education, social injustice and skills development. The foundation provides activities and services that include community development, business/entrepreneurship and fund-raising.

Bokang was born a healthy and happy child on September 22, 2006 and has endured more than most kids his age. In October 2013 he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour and had to undergo an operation. He always prides himself on being a “champion” due to the 27 stitches in his head.

According to Zodwa Masinga from the foundation, Bokang says only the champions will survive what he went though.

Masinga explains how this dream and foundation started.

Bokang was on his way for a hospital check-up when he noticed young kids sleeping on cardboard and plastic bags on the streets of Johannesburg. He was inspired to collect blankets and food for the needy children.

He approached family, relatives, friends and church people for donations. He managed to collect over 60 blankets which he distributed on Youth Day in 2015. These blankets were given out at Usindiso Ministries (a shelter in Johannesburg), Ikusasa Lethu Youth Project (an NGO in Motswaledi camp, Soweto) and Ikhaya Elihle Foster Home (a granny in Pimville who takes care of 10 homeless kids).

For Mandela Day, Bokang partnered with Southgate Mall and managed to gather blankets, clothing and food for Thembalethu Combined School in Eikenhof for over 80 less privileged children and parents.

All Bokang wants to do is donate, donate, donate. Hence the media has labelled him the “CEO of giving”. His favourite quote is “We rich people must learn to share with the poor.”

After the presentation, the grade one learners and staff members had a colour run that proved to be a joyful experience. All the colours had different meanings, for example yellow represented kindness, blue represented loyalty, green represented family and so forth.

The learners had a joyful day, with a serious reminder to support people with cancer, and were taught that they have a lot to be thankful for.
