JMPD will fine water wasters

These fines will be issued to everyone to ensure sustainability in the city.

ALTHOUGH Level Two water restrictions have been in place since November 15, the City of Johannesburg has just introduced a water restriction tariff on domestic users effective from September 2016.

Water levels in the integrated Vaal Dam have dropped below the 60 per cent threshold and Rand Water has reduced its supply to Johannesburg by 15 per cent. Hence Johannesburg Water will, in areas where demand is high, reduce the amount of water flowing to reservoirs between 20:00 and 04:00.

JMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, informed the COURIER that people who are found wasting water will be fined and the fines will range from R500 to R1 500. The metro police will be working with the City and Johannesburg Water to combat this waste.

“People must know that this is a serious concern for the city. Those found watering their gardens, filling up their pools, hosing their cars, or doing other water-wasting activities between those hours will be fined,” said Minnaar.
