JMPD unit to honour scholar patrollers

The purpose of the event is to honour scholar patrollers who took part in the scholar patrol throughout the year.

JOHANNESBURG Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is hosting a yearly Scholar Patrol Function on Thursday, September 8, at Wembley Stadium, Turffontein from 08:00 to 13:00.

The purpose of the event is to honour scholar patrollers who took part in the scholar patrol throughout the year. On this day, the JMPD will be honouring the learners with road safety certificates and medals for their selfless dedication in ensuring the safety of their fellow learners.

The Community Outreach Unit under the auspices of the JMPD is mandated to reach out to communities in terms of educating and creating awareness in matters relating to road safety, crime prevention by-laws, drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The unit’s members offer road safety education to schools in all regions within the City of Johannesburg’s area of jurisdiction from Regions A to G including all early community development centres to emphasise the importance of road safety.

Road safety is identified as one of the City’s priority programmes for the 2016/17 financial year in order for the department to achieve its yearly objectives aligned with the City’s Growth Development Strategy (GDS) 2040 and Integrated Development Plan (IDP). The unit also ensures that learners from different primary schools cross the road safely through monitoring scholar patrollers every morning and afternoon on a daily basis in all regions within the City of Johannesburg.
