Free maths and science revision sessions in cinemas

eduCate is made up of 10 pre-recorded revision sessions; five in maths and five in science.

ENTERTAINMENT met education on Wednesday, July 13, as the sixth annual eduCate programme was launched at Crown Reef Convention Centre at Gold Reef City.

Schools from across South Africa (mostly based in townships and underserviced areas) have been invited to participate in the programme with the support of the Department of Basic Education. Pupils are registered, indemnified and transported from their schools to their designated cinema complexes and back to their schools after the screenings. Before returning, learners are allowed to interact with teachers and tutors present who are available to address questions from the learners.

“We need immediate solutions and the eduCate programme serves our children by motivating pupils to work harder and matriculate with maths so that they can pursue studies in fields with good employment prospects,” said Primestars marketing managing director Martin Sweet.

This year, the sessions will run over 10 consecutive Sunday mornings from July 24 in all nine provinces. The filmed content is simultaneously broadcast to a network of digitised Ster Kinekor cinema complexes. eduCate is made up of 10 pre-recorded revision sessions; five in maths and five in science.

This was made possible by the key sponsors, the Capitec Foundation, Sasria and the Telkom Foundation, the programme is a national intervention that has assisted thousands of matriculants in maths and science utilising Ster Kinekor cinemas as ‘theatres of learning’.

“The burning issue at hand is that there is a dramatic shortage of skills in the hard sciences, and if we are to transform South Africa’s business sector, we must start by educating the youth in maths and sciences,” Sweet said.

Partnerships are the bedrock of social development and Primestars is proud to announce its partnership with influential personalities such as Zareef Minty, Pearl Modiadie, Thulisile Phongolo, Bulelani Balabala and Sbusiso Leope, among others, who are committed to drawing attention to the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects for high school pupils.
