80-year-old was strangled

Confirmed information about the murder of an 80-year-old Roseacres woman.

MEMBERS from the security company who found the body of the 80-year-old woman in her Roseacres home on Friday, June 10, said the cause of death was strangulation.

According to Const Rebecca Bila, communications officer for Moffatview SAPS, the elderly woman was tied up with a black electric cable and found lying in her bedroom. The suspect was discovered hiding in the deceased’s wardrobe.

According to South End Monitoring and Response, neighbours pressed the panic button after they heard the elderly woman scream. In response to the panic, the security company phoned the neighbour who explained that they heard a scream coming from the elderly woman’s house. Rita Chamberlain from South End then called the victim. Her call was answered but whoever answered the phone did not say anything and the call was suddenly disconnected.

Rita Chamberlain said:”We broke the backdoor of the house down to gain entry and said we would take responsibility if our suspicions were wrong. But unfortunately we found the woman’s murdered body. It looked like she was strangled. Her food was still on the stove and her money untouched in the ashtray.”

According to Rita and her colleague, Silvia de Jager, Moffatview SAPS officers arrested the 29-year-old Zimbabwean suspect who reportedly cried during the arrest.

Rita added that the elderly woman was a wonderful and kind woman.

“A case of murder is still being investigated,” said Bila.
