A celebration

On Africa Day and on every day we all need to strive to make every day an Earth Day.

IN celebration of Africa Day, the Miss Earth South Africa winners, ambassadors and Pikitup educational teams have been hard at work, educating students, planting trees and greening minds during the course of Africa Month.

The support for this initiative grew and before the team knew it, 83 trees were planted by friends and family of the Miss Earth South Africa organisation.

Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in our plight to combat the destruction of our natural heritage. The programme helps to create an awareness of sustainable development, our environment, wildlife and the conservation of our natural legacy in South Africa. This year on Earth Day the organisation launched the #WasteStopsWithME campaign with Pikitup, calling attention to the way in which, we as citizens, waste. Rubbish waste is included alongside the wasting of water, energy and food.

Africa Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate and learn more about our beautiful home.

“We as Africans, as South Africans and as inhabitants of this earth need to make sure we preserve and conserve our natural heritage, our home. It starts with one act a day, every recyclable that is given a second life, every drop of water saved and every kilogram of CO2 reduced is a step in the green direction. It begins with each of us,” said Miss Earth SA’s educational officer Ella Bella. The #WasteStopsWithME campaign strives to promote and engage citizens across South Africa to understand the role they play in being actively involved in becoming conscious citizens who consider their carbon, water, energy and waste footprint. They consider their environmental impact and reflect on the amount of waste they create every single day. When landfills cease to hold the waste being disposed of, what will we do? We need to act and rethink our behaviour today.

On Africa Day and on every day we all need to strive to make every day an Earth Day.
