Remembering Aids victims

The Candlelight Memorial event was attended by at least 78 people.

SOUTH Rand Hospital held its annual Aids Candlelight Memorial on Wednesday, May 18. The event was held on the second floor next to the X-ray department.

This was the time when members of the hospital community – the staff, patients, hospital visitors and community members – came together to reflect on and remember all those who have died from HIV/Aids.

The Candlelight Memorial event was attended by at least 78 people. The event started with the prayer offering by Pastor Jack Chirwa from Full Gospel Church of Christ in Turffotein followed by candlelighting which was led by employee wellness programme coordinator Ms Christy Griffiths.

“This is an important day where we remember the fallen heroes and heroines due to HIV/Aids and people that were also affected by the epidemic by living with the affected ones. For those who are negative, stay negative and treat those affected one with desired respect,” said Griffiths.

The primary purpose of the event was to lead efforts in breaking down barriers of violence against people living with HIV, including stigma and discrimination and other human rights violations, and giving hope to new generations.
