DA tackles drugs head-on

DA in the South of Johannesburg is tired of drug dealers corrupting the youth and leaving the South unruly.

DA Joburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba joined forces with local youngsters to take practical action to remove drugs and drug dealers from the South.

The united team of concerned leaders went to Rosettenville and La Rochelle to meet and greet residents and discuss drugs and crime in the deteriorating South of Johannesburg.

Mashaba unpacked the DA’s vision to residents of the South and also at the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC), when addressing the youth taking a stand against drugs.

Ward 57 and Ward 55 councillors, Faeeza Chame and Rasheida Landis said, “Residents are tired of drugs and drug dealers in the South. We even bring youngsters and elders from our wards to this centre to get help. This centre does not help people from Johannesburg only. There are many other people here who are not from the South.”

Member of Parliament, Manny de Freitas, Clr Chame, Clr Landis and PR Clr Tyrell Meyers started the day by listening to the complaints and visions of the youth at the LDAC, also known as the REC Wellness Centre, at the corner of Harry Street and Rifle Range Road in Robertsham.

The LDAC is committed to helping people curb the habit and lead a clean and purposeful lifestyle. Addiction counsellor Wayne Fearick told the COURIER that this wellness centre is different from many rehab centres because it is not a rehab and is free of charge. “Neither the addiction counsellor nor I is making any money from doing this, and everyone here comes because they or their parents have acknowledged that they have a problem and need help. When patients come here, we detox them and start teaching them a way of life as if they were kids again,” he said.
