Police officer arrested with five other suspects

The suspects are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.

Six men, including a police officer, have been arrested after a night-time raid.

The suspects were apprehended between 22:00, on Monday, February 22, and 01.30 on Tuesday, February 23, by members of the Germiston EMPD Task Team and the Germiston SAPS Detective Branch.

Officers also recovered a hijacked VW Polo, as well as a 9mm pistol with the serial numbers filed off.

The arrests came after a man was waved down by two men and a woman, who were known to him, on Saturday, February 20, at 11:00, who asked him for a lift to Katlehong.

“The driver of the Polo obliged and was shocked when one of the men pointed a firearm at him and took his VW Polo by force.

“He was jettisoned from his vehicle at the entrance to Katlehong near Huntersfield Stadium,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

Information subsequently gathered led to the arrest of the six suspects, who included a 40-year-old SAPS member found in possession of the hijacked vehicle at his home in Protea Glen.

“Three suspects were rounded up in Katlehong and a 9mm pistol with the serial numbers filed off was recovered, while the other two suspects were apprehended in Palm Ridge,” said Kgasago.

The five suspects, all in their 30s, nabbed in Katlehong and Palm Ridge, respectively claimed that the hijacked VW Polo was bought from them by the arrested SAPS member for R5 000.

They were all charged at the Germiston Police Station with possession of a hijacked vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
