MOW receives 620 cans of food

Learners decided to celebrate Valentine's Day by giving those in need food.

TO celebrate love and Valentine’s Day, learners from Pioneer Academies decided to donate cans of food to Meal on Wheels, on Friday, February 12.

As a result of this initiative, the learners collected 620 cans of food which will be used for Meals on Wheels’ feeding scheme in Rifle Range Road, Haddon, to feed all the people who line up at the house, to get a meal, on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

Kirtens Sutherland, from Meals on Wheels, said the cans will be very helpful as their feeding scheme in Haddon provides 1600 meals over the two days, to residents of the South.

“We are very happy to see such support from the learners. This is their first day of service and they have made us all very proud. They came up with the idea of giving for Valentine’s Day and they were all very keen on charity,” said a proud teacher, Cordelia Nkosi.

“I am so overwhelmed. Especially because all of these came from children, and it means a lot to us as Meals on Wheels since we cook about 13 000 meals a month. We wish Pioneer Academies all the best,” said Sutherland.

Unfortunately, in July 2015, while delivering 420 meals to various old age homes, Meals on Wheels’ VW Caddy was crashed into during a hit-and-run accident and the vehicle was deemed irreparable.

The charitable organisation is in need of another panel van to be able to continue delivering meals. Any person, company or organisation that can sponsor Meals on Wheels is encouraged to phone 011 434 2670.
