Appeal for essentials for rape victims

The objective of this project is to provide a rape survivor with essential items to assist them during the initial reporting phases at hospitals, crisis centres or police stations.

THE Epic Foundation, run by Alta McMaster, is appealing for essential items for its Comfort Pack Project.

“The objective of this project is to provide a rape survivor with essential items to assist them during the initial reporting phases at hospitals, crisis centres or police stations. Once a statement is taken and the medical examination completed, the rape survivor will be given the opportunity to clean up,” says Alta.

The Comfort Packs contain essential toiletry items and are given to the hospitals and crisis centres who deal with local police stations. “Any clothing containing DNA will be kept by the police as well, so clean underwear is an essential item in the bags. Where possible, additional clothing or a blankets are also provided to the centres.

“To you it may just be a bag with items of toiletries, for a survivor at a point where they feel at their lowest and most vulnerable, receiving a bag with comfort items has a huge impact in the healing process,” added Alta.

Items needed for the Comfort Packs:

Body lotion, bottled water (small bottles), brown paper bags, chips/snacks, colouring in books, colouring in crayons/pencils, cool drink, deodorant (roll or spray), face cloth, hair comb/brush, hair elastics and clips, lip balm, sanitary towels (packs individually sealed) and shampoo.

Also, small notebook, soap, soft toys, surgical gloves, sweets, tissues (small packs), toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear for women, men and children, Vaseline (small tubs), wet wipes, pen/pencil and plasters.

For more information, to make donations, please contact Alta on 082 940 6230 or email: info@epicfoundation.org.za

Financial donations will also be gratefully received.
