Mow Cook-a-Thon dishes up 5 000 meals

The annual Cook-a-Thon saw several companies cook up a storm for charity.

CITY DEEP: Meals on Wheels (Mow) and volunteers from several companies cooked up a storm during the annual Cook-a-Thon held at Mow’s warehouse in City Deep on Thursday, November 26.

Meals on Wheels invited companies to participate in the annual Cook-a-Thon and the eight groups of chefs-for-a-day managed to cook 5 000 healthy and nutritious meals that were delivered and served to the needy residents of the South.

“Those of you that have participated in the Cook-a-Thon will know that it’s hard work but will also know that it’s the most rewarding experience to end the year off with,” said Michelle Wohlberg from Mow.

As usual the the cook-a-thon started at a very high tempo as the volunteers were given an energetic gumboots lesson courtesy of Drum Tribe who had everyone at the warehouse singing Shosholoza before hitting the pots.

Simone Burts managed the Cook-a-Thon with the assistance of Lelanie Beaukes, who volunteered her time to help the rest of the volunteers cook the meals.

“We are grateful to all the volunteers from Absa, Westbury Youth Centre, Meals on Wheels’ call centre team and the residents from Vrededorp who came to help cook these meals,” said Lelanie.
