Traffic robots erected at critical intersection

For years the three way stop at the corner of Nephin and South Rand Roads in South Hills have placed people’s lives in danger as many drivers drive through this intersection without slowing down

AFTER a request by local residents, ward 57 councillor, Clr Faeeza Chame arranged, through Council, to have a set of traffic lights erected at the corner of Nephin and South Rand Roads in South Hills. Since the presence of these robots, there has been a dramatic decrease in road incidents and crashes.

For years the three way stop at the corner of Nephin and South Rand Roads in South Hills have placed people’s lives in danger as many drivers drive through this intersection without slowing down. As a daily norm, residents experience “near misses”.

Vehicle crashes have taken place there where people have been injured. Because an unofficial culture was created of people not completely stopping at the previous three way stop street, road rage would often take place between those motorists who indeed respected the stop intersection and those that didn’t.

“I received an email from the resident that had requested a robot at this intersection who expressed her satisfaction and thanks that the much needed robot was erected only two weeks after making the request,” said Clr Chame. She said that such emails makes her job worthwhile.

Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South, Manny de Freitas MP said that immediately addressing the needs of residents and the community at large means that a small problem does not become a big one. “A prime example is this matter, where our Councillor did not allow the issue to develop further by putting people in continued danger,” explained de Freitas.

Manny De Freitas MP congratulated and thanked Councillor Faeeza Chame for her tenacious and dedicated manner in which she approaches issues in the community.
