JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs (GOCA) in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education will, tomorrow on Saturday October 31, host the Grade 8 Provincial Olympiad Finals at Glenanda Primary School at 9:00.

The focus of the Olympiad will be on all three disciplines of the EMS (Economic Management Sciences) subjects namely Economics, Business studies and Consumer Financial Education. This is to inculcate a deeper understanding of the economy and a love for the subject; this will also ensure that learners understand markets and financial management and subsequently become smart consumers.

Leading up to the provincial finals, learners competed at various stages, starting from school level to cluster and district levels.

Milly Viljoen, Director for Consumer Education, Awareness and Stakeholder Relations at GOCA says “The skills that the competition envisages to develop among learners are, among others, how businesses function, and the role of money in the economy as well as consumer financial literacy; in essence, the aim of the competition is to encourage school learners to become consumer-wise entrepreneurs”.
