ER24 paramedic rescues dog from sewage drain

The dog had slipped into the drain and his “friend” was by the side of the drain barking for help.

SUIDEROORD – A Pitbull dog which had fallen into a sewage drain in Columbine Avenue, Suidroord, was rescued late on Tuesday evening, September 22 by an ER24 paramedic.

The dog's "friend" stood by as he was rescued.

A resident had reported the drowning dog at Sasol garage, Columbine Avenue, Suideroord and ER24 paramedic Shamiel Areff came to the rescue with assistance from Mondeor Community Policing forum members.

“The dog was literally drowning in sewage and if it hadn’t have been for his ‘friend’ we wouldn’t have even known of the incident,” said Michelle Pelser (Mondeor CPF).

“When Shamiel managed to drag the dog from the drain, the poor thing was badly dehydrated and a resident from over their garden wall handed us coffee with lots of sugar and salt, which the dog gulped down. After drinking the coffee and eating a few dog pellets he recovered after about 20 minutes and was able to stand and joined his friend, running around quite happily,” added Michelle.

Johannesburg SPCA was alerted and one of its members came out to assist. “I’m so touched that Israel came out all the way from Randburg to help and to take the two dogs to Johannesburg SPCA. When Israel opened up the van the two dogs jumped in, so they are obviously used to travelling in a vehicle.

“A great job well done, with thanks to ER24’s Shamiel, two residents from Seder and Nantes streets, Suideroord and Israel,” said Michelle.
