ANIMAL Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) will offer free rabies vaccinations at their premises on World Rabies Day, Monday, September 28.

Pet owners are encouraged to bring their healthy pets, that are older than three months, between 10:00 and 15:00 to 59 Alice Street, Regents Park for the vaccination.

It is a legal requirement in terms of the 1984 Animal Diseases Act, to vaccinate all dogs and cats between the ages of three and seven months. A second booster vaccination is required 12 months after the initial vaccination and a follow-up shot every three years.

Rabies is a disease that affects the brain and eventually leads to the death of the animal or person infected.

Symptoms include changes in the pet’s behaviour, excessive aggression, salivation and paralysis. Rabies is spread through the saliva of a rabid animal when they bite or lick sores of another animal or person.

The AACL will not offer consultations on World Rabies Day and only administer the vaccination to healthy pets. Booster vaccinations will be required twelve months later, which will be at your cost at your own veterinarian, unless you are an existing hospital client.
