Zetta knits to keep the little ones warm

Zetta Etsabeth from Robertsham is a retired lady of 77 years but she knitted 172 jerseys for less fortunate children last year. And she is at it again, She is a true example that anyone can make a difference if they want to.

ROBERTSHAM- A good friend of Zetta Etsabeth phoned the Southern COURIER, to tell us about the wonderful work this 77-year-old pensioner does for less fortunate children.

A resident of Robertsham for 40 years now, Zetta grew up on a Karoo farm and knitted her own jerseys by the age of 10. Her perfectionism and patience is evident in each and every jersey she knits and crochéts for children in Children’s Homes around Gauteng.

She takes great pride in her work and every stitch has to be perfect, or she starts over. Zetta has been knitting for children for many years now and she says: “Back then I still had money to buy wool. It’s getting harder to keep up on my income, but I will not stop. I have to do something. Many people talk, but they don’t do much to help.”

Pastor André Klopper, from the NG Kerk, Forrest Hill, collects the jerseys and makes sure they are distributed to children’s homes around Gauteng.

In 2014 Zetta knitted 172 jerseys for underprivileged little ones and she is at it again. Sitting on her knitting couch she is surrounded by 20 colourful jerseys made from scrap wool.

Zetta has been buying wool from the same Rosettenville outlet for 30 years and the owner keeps all the dirty wool and sells it to her at a reduced rate.

“I just wash the jerseys after knitting them and they are as good as new.”

To supplement her income, Zetta does auditing work for two firms three times a year and then purchases more wool to start knitting again.

This lovely lady is a true example that anyone can help if they only want to. If you would like to donate some wool to this worthy cause, phone Zetta on 011 680 6823. She will definitely put it to good use.
